Umpiring Advice of the Month
October 2009 Umpires Assessments Some guidance for team captains: As you are no doubt aware, if you play in divisions 1-3 you have the responsibility of grading the umpires who officiate your games. The rules concerning this were written BEFORE we changed the umpiring responsibilities to the previous or subsequent game. This has led to some confusion about who grades which umpire. The ideal would be for both captains to collaborate and give a common grade. However I appreciate this may not always be possible. Therefore you should grade the umpire who had control of your shooting end during the first quarter of the match. Please be sensible about your grades. Use the grading criteria attached to the duty officers’ sheets to give an OVERALL grade. Try not to home in on specific incidents. Remember the umpire may have had to make up to 1500 decisions during your game, some of them may have been wrong!!! It’s consistency in communication, movement/positioning, rules knowledge and use of advantage you’re looking at. You may also want to consider their overall control of the game. From your grades we hope to identify umpires with the potential to move up the ladder and give assistance to any who need support. Please give it careful thought. Final reminder: 1 is highest grade, 5 is lowest. |
November 2009 Q. Can I ask the umpire why she keeps penalising me for a specific offence? A. You can't ask her outright e.g." Why do you keep blowing me up for contact?" However you can, through your captain, ask for clarification of a rule. e.g. Captain to umpire "Could you clarify what you perceive to be contact that interferes?" |
